Coy Gibbs, Joe Gibbs Racing exec, dies hours after son wins Xfinity Series championship
Joe Gibbs, an NFL coach and NASCAR team owner hall of famer, has now lost both of his sons.
Coy Gibbs, the vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing and the son of NFL and NASCAR legend Joe Gibbs, died Sunday morning. He was 49.
Gibbs passed away just hours after his son, Ty Gibbs, won the Xfinity Series championship Saturday night, according to the Associated Press.
"It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night," the team said in a statement before the start of a NASCAR season finale Sunday.
Joe Gibbs, an NFL coach and NASCAR team owner hall of famer, has now lost both of his sons.
J.D. Gibbs died in 2019 of degenerative neurological disease, and was also 49 at the time of his death, the Associated Press also reports.
The cause of death for Coy Gibbs was not stated in the wire service reports, and appeared to remain unclear as of Monday.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Coy Gibbs," said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France. "On behalf of the France Family and all of NASCAR, I extend my deepest condolences to Joe, Pat, Heather, the Gibbs family and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing on the loss of Coy, a true friend and racer."
