LeBron James, Drake and Future accused of stealing 'intellectual property rights' to a hockey film
The basketball star and music artists are being sued for $10M over a hockey film called "Black Ice."
Basketball star Lebron James and rappers Drake and Future are accused of stealing "intellectual property rights" to a hockey movie and are being sued for $10 million.
The film, "Black Ice," is about a segregated hockey league in Canada for black players only, according to the New York Post.
Former head of the NBA Players Association and ex-federal prosecutor Billy Hunter, the plaintiff in the lawsuit, is also currently seeking a share of some of the profits from the documentary version of the story. He states in a complaint, which was filed in the Manhattan state Supreme Court, that he owns the rights to produce any film about the hockey league, which existed from 1895 to the 1925, the New York Post reports.
“While the defendants LeBron James, Drake and Maverick Carter [LeBron’s business partner] are internationally known and renowned in their respective fields of basketball and music, it does not afford them the right to steal another’s intellectual property,” the lawsuit filed by Hunter’s attorney said.
Hunter also claims that he paid $265,000 to George and Darril Fosty, the authors of the book that the documentary is based on, for all movie rights, but said that they worked out a side deal with LeBron and Drake, TMZ reports.
"I don't think they believed the property rights would be litigated," Hunter said in an interview with the New York Post. "They thought I would go away. They gambled."
"Black Ice" is set to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 10.
