Sitcom star Debra Messing shamed for spreading dirt about Biden accuser Tara Reade
'Democrats are good watching liberal sitcom actresses like this dig into her past to try to smear her reputation?' tweeted journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Debra Messing is one of many Hollywood stars refusing to speak out on Tara Reade’s behalf.
The former Joe Biden staffer alleges the presumptive presidential candidate sexually assaulted her back in 1993. Biden has denied the allegation.
Many of the same stars who were outspoken in 2018 in support of Christine Blasey Ford's uncorroborated charge of assault by a teenaged Brett Kavanaugh have had little to say about Reade’s allegation.
“Charmed” alum Rose McGowan, who helped bring producer Harvey Weinstein to justice, is the most prominent star to offer Reade her unequivocal support.
Messing, by contrast, has yet to defend Reade and routinely tweets pro-Biden messages. Over the weekend, Messing took things a step further.
The “Will & Grace” star tweeted a Medium story alleging Reade stiffed a nonprofit to the tune of $1,400. The article, written by progressive journalists Brian & Eddie Krassenstein, caught heat from two liberal reporters.
Noting that Messing’s tweet might explain why a woman would be afraid to make an allegation against a "powerful male Democratic politician," journalist Glenn Greenwald asked, "Democrats are good watching liberal sitcom actresses like this dig into her past to try to smear her reputation?"
Rolling Stone podcaster Katie Halper, who broke Reade’s story via her show, threw cold water on the Krassensteins’ reportage, claiming it’s already been debunked.
Twitter banned the Krassenstein brothers from the platform last year, alleging they employed fake social media accounts to boost their tweets. The brothers claim they did no such thing.
Messing deleted the Krassensteins’ story tweet Sunday.
It’s hardly the first time Messing has regretted a tweet. Last year, she and fellow “Will & Grace” star Eric McCormack suggested on Twitter they wouldn’t work alongside anyone who supported President Donald Trump.

The stars later backtracked following blowback from the left and right. Whoopi Goldberg of “The View” fame admonished the actress for promoting Joe McCarthy-style ideological blacklisting.

Reade shared her Biden allegation earlier this year, but news outlets proved slow to report her allegations. The legal foundation created in the Harvey Weinstein scandal’s wake to help people like Reade, Times Up, refused to take her case.

A number of people, including Reade’s brother and a former neighbor, claim she told them about the alleged incident years ago. A recently unearthed 1993 CNN clip of “Larry King Live” found the host fielding a call alluding to the allegation from a woman Reade has identified as her since-deceased mother.
Over the weekend two more people recalled Reade telling them about the alleged assault.

Two years ago, Messing was part of a massive Hollywood push to deny Kavanaugh a seat on the Supreme Court.
At that time, the actress tweeted: “We call on Judge Brett Kavanaugh to withdraw his nomination immediately. We the people, regardless of political party, will not tolerate a man credibly accused of sexual violence by multiple women as our next Supreme Court Justice. #TIMESUP”
