President Donald Trump said Sunday his administration will impose a 100% tariff on films produced outside the United States and imported into the country.

Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post in which he said he has instructed the Commerce Department and US Trade Representative to carry out his order.

“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,” Trump also wrote in his post. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

The details of the plan have yet to be released. Theater audiences have slightly increased since the pandemic but are still down over the past several years, with movies increasingly being released on streaming platforms.
