US ties Portugal 0-0 to advance at Women's World Cup
The first 45 minutes of the game was described as a "mess" for the U.S.
The United States Women's National Soccer Team tied 0-0 against Portugal on Tuesday in New Zealand, advancing to the knockout round of the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Over 10 previous matches, the U.S. has not lost to Portugal, according to NPR.
The first 45 minutes of the game was described as a "mess" for the U.S. by Fox Sports soccer analyst Alexi Lalas.
The match did not improve for America when play resumed. Portugal nearly won the game in overtime with a shot that hit off a post.
Additionally, Megan Rapinoe, who plans on retiring at the end of the season, entered in the 61st minute of the game but was unable to bring her team to victory.
U.S. player Alex Morgan said after the game: "We had so many corners. So many opportunities. Just unlucky."
