Charlotte Douglas International Airport workers have gone on strike on Monday as a busy week of Thanksgiving travel gets underway.
The workers from ABM and Prospect Airport Services are striking in protest of what they argue are low wages, according to the Service Employees International Union.
Most of workers striking make between $12.50 and $19 per hour, which officials with the union said is below the living wage for a single person without children in the Charlotte area, the Associated Press reported.
Employees voted to authorize the strike on Friday, demanding an "end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season," the union said in a statement.
