Egg prices continued downward trend in May
The price surge began in the latter half of 2022, in part driven by the spread of avian flu that reduced the total supply.
After surging earlier this year, the prices of eggs continued their downward decline in May, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Whereas in January, the combined regional price of a dozen eggs exceeded $5.00, that figure fell meaningfully to roughly $2.30 per dozen by the end of February, but rose again to nearly $3.50 in March. The downward trend resumed in April and by May, the price had fallen roughly 80% from its January level to just over $1.00.
The price surge began in the latter half of 2022, in part driven by the spread of avian flu that reduced the total supply, The Hill noted.
The household staple was also one of the many items to suffer from price hikes due to inflation, which the Consumer Price Index Report for May noted had declined to 4%, down from a June 2022 high of 9.1%.
