You Vote: Are soaring mortgage rates causing you or someone you know to rethink buying a home?
Rates hit 7% for first time in two decades.
The average rate for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage has topped 7% for the first time in 20 years.
The current rate of 7.08% is the highest level since April 2002 and is "leading to greater stagnation in the housing market," according to the mortgage giant Freddie Mac.
Home prices are still up significantly from a year ago but have declined recently, with high mortgage rates making it harder for would-be homebuyers, who are staying on the sidelines.
Rates stood at 2.65% in January 2021, when President Biden entered office. Since the start of this year, they've spiked 3.86 percentage points, the largest year-to-date increase in over 50 years.
