Antisemitic hate crimes in New York City increased 125% in November: police
New York Mayor Eric Adams blamed social media for the increase.
Antisemitic hate crimes rose 125% in November compared to October and the same time last year, according to New York Police Department data.
Last month, 60% of all New York City hate crimes targeted Jews, with 45 incidents in the five boroughs. In October 2022 and November 2021, Jews were the victims of 20 hate crimes.
New York Mayor Eric Adams blamed social media for the increase.
"We have normalized hate and I continue to say the biggest spreader of this hate is social media," he said during a press conference Monday, according to the New York Post. "What social media is doing to normalize hate, to give a platform for hate, to spread hate, it's just really alarming."
The crimes also coincide with antisemitic remarks from some high-profile celebrities, such as Brooklyn Nets NBA player Kyrie Irving and Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.
Antisemitic hate crimes in New York have increased more than 50% so far in 2022, with 278 attacks compared to 182 at this time last year.
