Vance says Pope Leo should stick to 'matters of morality' and leave public policy to Trump
Vance, who converted to Catholicism, said he doesn't "worry too much" about disagreements between Trump and the Pope on matters of policy, which he said should be left to the president.
Vice President JD Vance on Monday discussed a photo President Donald Trump had posted on social media that was reported to portray the president as Jesus.
Trump said that the photo was meant to portray himself as a doctor, and Vance said on Fox News that Trump deleted the photo after the president saw people were misunderstanding the "joke."
Vance also discussed Trump's recent criticisms of the political positions Pope Leo XIV has taken on matters of immigration and foreign policy.
"We can respect the Pope. We certainly have a good relationship with the Vatican. But we're also going to disagree on substantive questions from time to time," Vance said, adding that the differences of opinion between the Pope and the president are "not particularly newsworthy."
When asked if he agreed with Trump's criticisms of the Pope's statements, Vance, who is a Catholic convert, said he thinks the Pope should "stick to matters of morality."
"Let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy. But when they are in conflict, they are in conflict. I don’t worry about it too much," Vance said.
