Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday told critics on the left that oppose his openness to discuss border security concerns with the incoming presidential administration to go ahead and "cancel" him.

Adams expressed hope last month that President-elect Donald Trump's new administration would do more to help him battle the sudden surge of illegal immigrants in his city, and the rising crime rates from those migrants, than what the Biden administration has done.

The Democrat also expressed interest in meeting with Trump's border czar Tom Homan, who has likewise stated that he is willing to meet with Adams.

"I would like to speak with our border czar and find out what his plans are, where our common grounds are, [and] where we can work together," Adams said in a press conference, per Fox News. "I strongly believe, my history is sitting down with those across the aisle with different ways of thinking and sit down and share my ideas."

The mayor said his focus would be on the illegal immigrants who are committing crimes in New York, and the ones who are abiding by U.S. laws outside of entering the country illegally shouldn't be "rounded up in the middle of the night."

Adams also told people to "cancel me" if they did not approve of the way he handled the migrant crisis. New York City itself has received over 210,000 illegal immigrants over the past two years, as of October.

"Well, cancel me, because I'm going to protect the people of this city, and if you come into this country, in this city, and think you're going to harm innocent New Yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers, this is not the mayor you want to be in a city under," he said.

Adams' willingness to engage the Trump administration comes after the Biden administration repeatedly rejected his requests for additional funding for the migrant crisis. Adams on Tuesday said the city has spent $6.4 billion on the crisis so far.
