Latest effort to recall LA County DA Gascon fails over insufficient ballot signatures
Recall effort follows recent, successful one by San Francisco voters in recalling another progressive prosecutor, District Attorney Chesa Boudin
The recent effort to have a recall vote for progressive Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon has failed because supporters could not get enough valid signatures on the petition to have the measure put on a ballot.
The announcement was made Monday by the office of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorded/County Clerk after it had completed the examination and verification of all 715,833 petition signatures submitted for the recall of Gascon, according to Fox News.
"Based on the examination and verification, which was conducted in compliance with the statutory and regulatory requirements of the California Government Code, Elections Code, and Code of Regulations, 520,050 signatures were found to be valid and 195,783 were found to be invalid," the office said.
To qualify the recall for the ballot, the petition required 566,857 valid signatures.
The latest failed attempt to recall Gascon follows San Francisco voters recently recalling District Attorney Chesa Boudin, who also is considered a progressive prosecutor.
Gascon's opponents say he’s soft on crime because of his progressive policies that slight victims and have allowed criminals to receive lenient sentences.
They also say his directives are to blame for an increase in crime and emboldening criminals who no longer fear robust prosecution by the district attorney's office. Gascon has repeatedly denied these charges, Fox also reports.
