President Joe Biden will gather a group of technology leaders in San Francisco on Tuesday to discuss artificial intelligence.

Biden plans to meet with eight leaders in the field from across academia and advocacy groups in order to determine how to regulate the emerging field of AI, exploring its potential for economic growth and national security while safeguarding against potential dangers, according to AP News

The recent emergence of AI chatbot ChatGPT and other such tools has kickstarted investment in the sector. Since AI can produce text, music, images, and computer code, the technology could replace workers, causing layoffs.

“What you’re doing has enormous potential and enormous danger,” said Biden during a meeting with tech CEOs at the White House in May.

White House chief of staff Jeff Zients’ office is constructing a set of actions the federal government can take going forward regarding AI, according to the White House. Biden administration officials are meeting multiple times a week, and the administration is also seeking commitments from private companies to address the technology's potential risks.

Biden is meeting with Tristan Harris, executive director of the Center for Human Technology; Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media; and Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, among others on Tuesday at the Fairmont hotel in San Francisco.

Biden is also in the Bay Area to raise money for his 2024 reelection campaign.  He will hold two fundraising events on Tuesday, after holding two on Monday, one of which was hosted by the chief technology officer and executive vice president for AI at Microsoft, Kevin Scott.
