Donald Trump says he will vote against Florida abortion rights initiative
Trump said there needs to be a compromise between a ban on abortion after just six weeks, and bans that prohibit the procedure up until the ninth month of pregnancy.
Former President Donald Trump on Friday said he would vote against a controversial abortion measure in Florida this November.
The firm stance on the ballot measure is a turn for the former president, who had previously declined to commit one way or the other and has been more vocal about his views on abortion as he and Vice President Kamala Harris enter the final stretch of the 2024 elections.
Trump said there needs to be a compromise between a ban on abortion after just six weeks, and bans that prohibit the procedure up until the ninth month of pregnancy.
“I think ... you need more time than six weeks. I’ve disagreed with that right from the early primaries when I heard about it, I disagreed with it,” Trump told Fox News. “At the same time, the Democrats are radical because the nine months is just a ridiculous situation. ... All of that stuff is unacceptable, so I will be voting no for that reason."
Florida currently bans abortion after six weeks except for in the cases of rape and incest. But the new ballot measure would ban abortion after fetal viability, which is approximately 24 weeks. It would also include exceptions to protect the life of the mother.
Trump has also spoken publicly about protecting In Vitro Fertility (IVF) treatments, and has said he is against a national ban on abortion, because the matter should be left up to individual states.
