First Democratic congressman calls on Secret Service director to step down
Director Cheatle has resisted calls for her resignation after a would-be assassin shot Trump on her watch
Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., is the first Democratic member of Congress to call for the Secret Service director's resignation. Boyle joined a chorus of calls from across the aisle for Director Kimberly Cheatle to step down after an attempt on former President Donald Trump's life on July 13.
Although Trump escaped with minor injuries, the would-be assassin killed one rallygoer and seriously injured two others.
"I am calling on Director Cheatle to resign immediately following last weekend’s shooting of a Presidential candidate in Western Pennsylvania," said Boyle on Saturday, according to Fox News.
Boyle accused Cheatle of allowing "unacceptable operational failures" and stated he had "no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service if Director Cheatle chooses to remain in her position."
Boyle added his name to the list of congresspeople calling for Cheatle's resignation.
"I think the honorable thing to do is step aside, at some point there, my concern is that the focus of the mission is not the top priority with her," said Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., criticizing Cheatle over DEI initiatives.
Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., echoed Loudermilk's concerns over DEI: "I can tell you when you primarily, when you primarily go after DEI, you end up with D-I-E."
It remains to be seen whether Cheatle, who has consistently refused to resign, will heed the new call from across the aisle.
