PGA terminates deal to hold 2022 PGA Championship at Trump's Bedminster golf course
Trump Organization says PGA has no right to terminate the agreement
The Professional Golf Association said Sunday that it has cancelled its deal to play the 2022 PGA Championship, one of professional golf’s biggest tournaments, at President Trump’ course in Bedminster, N.J.
"The PGA of America Board of Directors voted tonight to exercise the right to terminate the agreement to play the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster," PGA of America President Jim Richerson said in a statement.
The announcement follows the uprising Wednesday in Washington, D.C., in which pro-Trump supporters overtook the U.S. Capitol Building as lawmakers attempted to certify the 2020 presidential election for Democrat Joe Biden. The riot resulted in at least five deaths.
"It's become clear that conducting the PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand and would put at risk the PGA's ability to deliver on many programs and sustain the longevity of our mission," also said Richerson, who did not mention the events last week.
"It was a decision made to ensure that PGA of America and PGA professionals can continue to lead and grow our great game for decades to come," he said.
The Trump Organization said in a statement that the PGA has "no right to terminate the agreement," according to NBC News.
