Trump non-committal about whether he over-emphasized social media, will change strategy

President Trump took a pass on questions Wednesday about whether he overemphasized the importance of social media, from which he has now essentially been banned, and whether he'll need it again should he seek reelection.

"I think that people are seeing the great job that we did," Trump said in response to questions in a phone interview on the Fox News cable TV channel. "We had the greatest economy in the history of our country. We re-built our military. We had great military support. You look at the Hispanic support, we've had – we had the best Hispanic support. I just think that people are missing us."

The former president also responded to the questions about whether he perhaps "over-estimated" social media and about "friendly" polling that suggests he's more popular among voters than when he was in office.

"It is strange because my numbers now are the best they've ever been," he said. "I think that's because maybe they [Americans] look at the bonus and they look at what's happening to our country. I left. I think social media is important. ... I think social media is fine if it's used properly."

Trump had a reported 88.7 million Twitter followers before he was suspended indefinitely from the platform in January, in the wake of the Capitol breach.

The former president also spoke about his efforts to develop his own social media platform.

"I think we're gonna have a platform that's going to be incredible, and that's what's being developed right now," he said.

On the issue of whether he'll change his rapid-fire social media strategy, he defended his past actions when he said: "I had to move fast. Our country was in bad shape. I had to move fast."
