Bill de Blasio, wife announce separation but plan to still live together
The former mayor personally contended that his mayoral tenure had been a catalyst for their declining marital relations as well.
Former New York City Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio, 62, and wife Chirlane McCray, 68, have decided to separate after 29 years of marriage, the pair told the New York Times.
While they do not intend to file for divorce, they do plan to date other people while still sharing their Park Slope townhouse, the pair told the outlet. The pair have two children, both of whom are in their 20s.
De Blasio and McCray made the decision to split about two months ago after a frank conversation about their declining affections for one another.
"You can't fake it," McCray told the Times.
"You can feel when things are off... and you don’t want to live that way," said de Blasio.
The former mayor served from 2014 to 2021 and was succeeded by current Democratic Mayor Eric Adams. Before the end of his official tenure, de Blasio mounted a failed 2020 presidential bid for the Democratic nomination to unseat then-President Donald Trump.
Said campaign was apparently a turning point for their relationship, with McCray deeming the bid a "distraction" from de Blasio's mayoral duties to his constituents.
