Boris Johnson resigns as MP after learning he will be sanctioned
The vacancy will trigger a special election to fill his seat. Johnson represented a suburban area of London.
Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Friday that he was resigning as a member of Parliament after learning he would be sanctioned for misleading the legislative body.
In making the announcement, Johnson indicated that his political detractors were looking to drive him from the government entirely. The Privileges Committee, he said, had informed him " they are determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of Parliament."
"Their purpose from the beginning has been to find me guilty, regardless of the facts," he said, per the Washington Times. "It is very sad to be leaving Parliament — at least for now."
Johnson resigned from his post as prime minister last year following myriad scandals involving his violation of his own COVID-19 lockdown rules and other matters, among other matters. He did, however, retain his seat in Parliament.
The vacancy will trigger a special election to fill his seat. Johnson represented a suburban area of London.
