Los Angeles police move to rapid test for coronavirus those arrested, amid high infection in jails
The rapid tests could slow infection in jails, but the accuracy of such testing remains questionable.
The Los Angeles Police Department is reportedly going forward with a plan to give a rapid-result coronavirus test to those arrested by officers.
Police Chief Michel Moore says he’s already asked City Hall to secure the testing, which can yield results within 15 minutes, though the accuracy of such tests remains questionable, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Officials already reportedly test new jail arrivals, but results take days. They anticipate tests with quicker results will help them isolate inmates with the virus, considering its rapid spread in such close-quarter environments as detention centers and assisted-living facilities.
More than 350 L.A. County jail inmates have already tested positive for the coronavirus, and roughly 100 LAPD officers and staff have tested positive, the newspaper also reports.
