Gavin Newsom says Biden's age is why 'he's been so successful'
Newsom, who has been campaigning for Biden, said that the president's age has been an asset in passing major legislation.
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom defended questions about President Joe Biden's age by saying Sunday that it is the reason for his success in the Oval Office and his reelection would be a "gift" to the U.S. public.
"I've seen him up close. I've seen him from afar. But here's my point: it's because of his age that he's been so successful," Newsom said on NBC News' "Meet the Press."
At 81 years old, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history and polls show that most Americans feel Biden is "too old" for another term in the White House as he runs for reelection this fall.
Newsom, who has been campaigning for Biden, said that the president's age has been an asset in passing major legislation.
"It's because of the wisdom and the character that's developed over years that we have the CHIPS and Science Act, the infrastructure bill, and the PACT Act, and the Safer Communities Act," he said.
"We've seen these bipartisan accomplishments because of his capacity of understanding, because of his leadership," Newsom also said. "So the opportunity to express that for four more years, what a gift it is for the American people. And as a Democrat, what a gift it is for me to make the case for the leader of our party, Joe Biden."
