Georgia's Republican legislative leaders on Wednesday said they don't have enough time to take up redrawing political maps in the current special session. 

The Supreme Court ruled in April that Louisiana's second majority-Black congressional district relied too heavily on race and was therefore an unconstitutional gerrymander. Following the ruling, Georgia's Republican Gov. Brian Kemp called lawmakers into a special session to consider redrawing the state's districts ahead of the 2028 election. 

Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns said on Wednesday that it's important that the redistricting process be responsible, transparent and have ample opportunity for public input, NBC News reported. 

"When the House learned that it was placed on the call for a special session, we knew it was not the right path forward for the state at this time," Burns said. 

Republican leaders have suggested they have the option of revisiting the issue ahead of the 2028 election.
