Michigan GOP governor nominee Tudor Dixon unveils $1 billion plan to help police
"If we cannot keep our communities safe, we cannot keep people here," Dixon said.
Tudor Dixon, the GOP nominee for Michigan governor, has announced a $1 billion proposal to bolster and improve the ranks of police officers and other emergency personnel in the state.
Dixon's proposal includes invest $1 billion over four years to recruit and retain over 12,500 police officers and emergency response personnel.
She announced her plan Tuesday in front of the Grand Rapids police department headquarters, eight weeks before the midterm general election in which she is challenging Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
"If we cannot keep our communities safe, we cannot keep people here," she said about getting more public safety personnel and better training them to address the issues of rising crime rates, problems within law enforcement agencies and other related issues, according to the Detroit News.
About $700 million of the money is the proposed spending plan, which she would try to get enacted if she defeats Whitmer, would be allocated for support, training, work-study programs and incentives to recruit police officers, ambulance workers and firefighters from other states, Dixon also said.
And about a quarter-of-a-million dollars would go toward equipment, training and mental health services.
The plan would also use $50 million to "eliminate backlogs and bring justice to victims of violent crime by providing additional resources to locate and lock up the violent offenders and rapists that threaten our communities," Dixon also said.
