Harris: 'We’re not trying to take anybody’s guns away' but we need assault weapons ban
Harris: 'Is the price of groceries still too high? Yes. Do we have more work to do? Yes'
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, said during a live interview on Tuesday touted her proposal to give first-time homebuyers $25,000 in downpayment assistance because not everyone is born with a "silver spoon" in their mouth.
To support her position, Harris said her mother saved her money to eventually buy her first home when Harris a teenager.
"I know where I come from," she said. "I know that so many people work so hard and should have the opportunity to just get their foot in the door."
When asked about gun control, Harris said she is not looking to confiscate guns from lawful owners.
"We’re not trying to take anybody’s guns away from them but we do need an assault weapons ban,” she said.
During the discussion, Harris revealed she had a conversation with former President Trump on Tuesday after he survived a second assassination attempt.
Harris said she offers a "new generation of leadership" for the United States, contrary to others who want to "incite fear."
Harris was asked if voters are better off than they were four years ago.
She acknowledged that more work needs to be done in inflation.
“Is the price of groceries still too high? Yes. Do we have more work to do? Yes. And I will tell you I do believe that I do offer a new generation of leadership for our country," she said during a live interview in Philadelphia hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists.
“Turning a page on an era that sadly has shown us attempts by some to incite fear, to create division in our country," she added.
