Harris says reparations should be studied at fed level but doesn't commit to plan
As a U.S. senator from California, Harris co-sponsored a bill to create a federal commission to examine slavery reparations and make recommendations on the issue.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, said Tuesday that she continues to support studying the issue of reparations for descendants of slaves.
"On the point of reparations, it has to be studied, Harris said Tuesday on Charlamagne Tha God's radio show, "The Breakfast Club."
"There's no question about that. And I've been very clear about that position," she added.
The eponymous show and its host, whose name is Lenard Larry McKelvey, have become an influential part of Americans politics, particularly as an outlet for the views and concerns of black voters.
As a senator from California, Harris co-sponsored a bill to create a federal commission to examine slavery reparations and make recommendations on the issue.
However, Harris stopped short of backing a specific plan for reparations, which is described as compensation for an injustice.
In the United States, the matter of reparations has recently centered largely on compensation, in some form, for black Americans whose ancestors were pressed into slavery.
