The political organization, "Our Revolution," which was founded by Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, has pulled its endorsement for Graham Platner in the Maine Senate race and endorsed former state lawmaker Troy Jackson on Tuesday instead.

The change comes a day after a woman Platner used to date alleged that the Democratic Senate candidate sexually assaulted her in 2021. Platner has denied the allegations and has declined, so far, to drop out of the race, despite pressure from top Democrats, but said he would ponder the "best path forward" for defeating Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in November.

Platner also reportedly claimed that he would not drop from the race unless he is allowed to choose his replacement.

Jackson, who ran for governor earlier this year, filed paperwork to run for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Jackson’s platform includes a pledge to bring down prescription drug costs, emphasizes affordable housing and lowering property taxes.

A spokesperson for "Our Revolution" said Jackson's campaign is the one that most closely resembles Platner's and the endorsement change comes just days before Platner must decide whether to drop his campaign. He has until Monday.

"Maine’s progressives did not win the primary by a fluke or a narrow margin," the spokesperson said. "They won it in full force, by a margin the [Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee] and Janet Mills cannot spin away ... [The] result stands. It does not disappear because one candidate is gone.

"That is why we are rallying behind Troy Jackson," the spokesperson continued. "Troy is a logger, a union leader, and the former President of the Maine State Senate ....  He has spent his life in the fight working people are asking for, not arriving to it because a seat opened up.

"This is bigger than one Senate seat," the spokesperson added. "To take back the Senate, Democrats have to beat Susan Collins, and they will not do it by abandoning the coalition that already showed up once."

Sanders said Tuesday that he has called Platner and urged him to step aside as the party nominee.
