Ted Cruz warns Republicans not to underestimate Kamala Harris as a candidate
Cruz warned that Democrats will push Harris' as an "historic candidate" because she would be the first female president if elected. She is already the first female vice president.
Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday warned Republicans to be wary of Vice President Kamala Harris as she becomes the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president.
President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping his bid for reelection on Sunday, after heavy pushing from Democratic leaders. He has since endorsed his running mate, Harris, to be his replacement at the top of the ticket.
Cruz warned that Democrats will push Harris' as an "historic" candidate because she would be the first female president if elected. She is already the first female vice president.
"Republicans, I worry, vastly underestimate Kamala Harris. They don't think very highly of her. They don't think she's terribly bright. When you or I bring up Kamala Harris' name in Republican circles, people laugh. It's immediately a punchline," Cruz said Monday on his podcast "Verdict with Ted Cruz."
"I think people are underestimating what billions of dollars of free media, of the entire corrupt corporate media complex, pitching her as a combination of Mother Teresa, Oprah and Gandhi, [can do,]" he added.
Cruz said that he still believes former President Donald Trump will win the election in November, but that it is not the guarantee that some Republicans appear to think that it is.
"It is not [a] given … If you're a Democrat, what makes you nervous is chaos, and this much chaos 100 days out is scary," Cruz said. "But you know what? Even more scary is going to an election where you're almost certain to lose, which is where Biden was."
Trump was officially named the Republican nominee for president at the GOP convention last week, but Harris still needs to secure enough delegates to officially become the Democratic nomination at the party's convention in Chicago next month.
