Trump responds: 'Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness'
During speech to conservative group, president slams Democratic convention as 'gloomiest' in U.S. history.
President Trump on Friday struck an upbeat tone about the United States, suggesting Joe Biden and the Democrats had unnecessarily created the "gloomiest" nominating convention in American history.
"Where Joe Biden sees American darkness, I see American greatness," Trump said during a talk at the 2020 National Council for Policy meeting.
Trump was responding to Biden's claim this week that the president has "cloaked America in darkness" during the last three-and-a-half years of the his presidency. On Friday, Trump derided the 2020 Democratic convention as "the darkest and angriest and gloomiest convention in American history."
Trump said that at the convention Democrats "attack[ed] America as racist and a horrible country." The president in turn painted own grim picture of America under Democratic governance, claiming that "if [Democrats] prevail, no one will be safe in our country and no one will be spared."
He claimed, among other things, that a Biden White House would attempt to curtail Second Amendment gun rights.
"[T]hey want to end guns, they want to take away Second Amendment — that alone should win you the election," he said.
