Ford announces two year delay in launching all-electric SUV

Ford announced Thursday it will delay the launch its electric sports utility vehicle.

The original, scheduled launch date was 2025, the automaker now says the new timeline for the three-row electric vehicle is 2027. Ford said the delay will allow time for the EV SUV market to further develop.

Meanwhile, the company is expanding its hybrid electric vehicle offerings. Hybrids combine aspects of gas-powered  and battery-powered engines. By 2030, the company said, it expects to offer hybrids across its entire Ford Blue lineup, which is its gas-combustion business.

“As the No. 2 EV brand in the U.S. for the past two years, we are committed to scaling a profitable EV business, using capital wisely and bringing to market the right gas, hybrid and fully electric vehicles at the right time,” Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said in a statement.

In 2023, Ford lost over $64,000 on each EV it sold, but the company maintained profitability because of the revenues from its Ford Blue business.
