Argentina’s newly elected libertarian president will not withdraw the country from the Paris Agreement on climate change, despite calling global warming a hoax.
The country’s new climate diplomat, Marcia Levaggi, said Argentina will remain committed to the Paris Agreement, according to Reuters, and it will continue pursuing net-zero emissions by 2050.
Levaggi said that while President Javier Milei is committed to giving Argentina a freer market economy, “the market demands to include measures to address climate change.”
The 2015 international treaty commits the 196 countries that signed onto it to keep average global temperatures to 1.5 degree celsius above pre-industrial levels by reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Former President Donald Trump began the process of withdrawing the U.S. from the treaty in 2017, which was completed three years later, but President Joe Biden signed the country back onto it upon taking office.
Former Trump White House climate advisor George David Banks told The Washington Post that Trump would likely withdraw the U.S. from the agreement should he win a second term in the 2024 election.
