The Louisiana pastor arrested for holding church services this past Sunday again held services – challenging a state ban on large gatherings and suggesting Americans need the services to help cope with the deadly coronavirus outbreak.

“They would rather come to church and worship like free people than live like prisoners in their homes,” said Tony Spell, pastor of the Life Tabernacle Church, near Baton Rouge, according to Reuters.

Pastor Tony Spell, who was arrested last week for holding services, is holding the services as Louisiana is home to one of the biggest U.S. outbreaks of the virus.

Those who attended this past Sunday's service reportedly kept the recommended 6-feet distance from one another, except for family members.

Spell has suggested he’s been holding the services to help those suffering with anxiety and depression, as the deadly virus spreads across the country.

An attorney for Spell is questioning the order by Democratic Gov. John Edward Bell that bans public gatherings of 10 people or more.

Joe Long, a civil rights lawyer, argues that Bell’s March 22 order violates U.S. constitutional rights on freedom of religion and to peaceably assemble. He also is preparing a lawsuit against Edwards, the wire service also reports.
