Washington, D.C., health officials on Monday confirmed the district's first case of the measles was detected earlier this month, and the known victim reportedly traveled in the city via Amtrak.

The development comes as the measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico surpasses 300 confirmed cases, and at least 40 hospitalizations. One child has died from the contagious disease.

D.C. health officials warned residents and visitors who went by certain locations that they could have been exposed to the illness.

Those locations include:

Amtrak Northeast Regional 175 Train Southbound:
March 19, 7:30 pm - 1:30 am

Amtrak Concourse, Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002
March 19, 11:00 pm - 1:30 am

MedStar Urgent Care Adams Morgan, 1805 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009
March 22nd, 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

"Measles symptoms usually appear in two stages. In the first stage, most people have a fever of greater than 101 degrees, a runny nose, watery red eyes and a cough," D.C. Health said in a press release. "The second stage starts 3 to 5 days after symptoms start, when a rash begins to appear on the face and spread to the rest of the body."

The first phase of symptoms usually appear a week after exposure, and a person can be contagious for four days before the rash and four days after, the department said.

Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, but new cases have emerged as vaccination rates against the virus have declined, health experts warned
