House Republicans call on Democrats to pressure Biden to negotiate about the debt ceiling
McCarthy called out Biden for not being willing to negotiate on the issue of the debt ceiling.
House Republicans are calling on Democrats to pressure President Joe Biden into negotiating with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on the debt ceiling, threatening to "hold them accountable," if they don't.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) issued a memo earlier this week that called on Democrats and President Biden to start negotiating with McCarthy on a resolution of the debt ceiling issue.
"Voters hate Democrats who make promises in election years to do the right thing, but suddenly go mute when the country needs them to speak up," NRCC Communications Director Jack Pandol said in a statement, according to the Washington Examiner.
"Runaway spending ballooned on Democrats' watch and their bill has come due," the statement continued. "House Democrats can take responsibility for their spending choices now by telling President Biden to grow up and negotiate."
McCarthy came out with his debt ceiling package on Wednesday, "proposing to raise the debt ceiling over the next year either by $1.5 trillion or until March 31, 2024, whichever comes first," according to the Examiner. The package was rejected by Biden and the Democrats.
McCarthy cited some of the proposals included in his "Limit, Save, Grow" plan that he says would "responsibly raise debt into next year and provide $4.5 trillion in savings," according to the outlet.
McCarthy called out Biden for not being willing to negotiate about the issue, which according to him is long overdue.
"President Biden is skipping town to deliver a speech in Maryland rather than sitting down to address the debt ceiling," McCarthy said earlier this week. "He's giving America's debt the southern border treatment: ignoring it and hope that it goes away. In fact, he's been avoiding the issue for 77 straight days and counting."
