Judge ok's $91 million Trump appeal bond in E. Jean Carroll case
A jury in January awarded Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan on Tuesday approved former President Donald Trump's $91 million bond while he appeals a civil verdict against him over E. Jean Carroll's defamation and sexual assault claims against him.
Trump posted the bond last week after unsuccessfully asking Kaplan to delay enforcement of the payment.
"The Amended Supersedas Bond is deemed sufficient to stay execution of the Judgment to the extent that the Judgment awards damages," Kaplan wrote, according to The Hill.
Carroll came forward in 2019 claiming Trump had raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room some time in the 1990s. A jury in May 2023 held Trump liable for battery and defamation.
A jury in January awarded Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. The bond amounted to a standard 110% of the award. Kaplan's ruling relates to the 2024 verdict.
Trump continues to deny Carroll's claims and hopes to see the judgement overturned or reduced.
