Majority of Dems, Republicans don't want Biden or Trump in 2024: poll
Support for Biden among Democrats has moderately increased since July.
A majority of both Democrats and Republicans want neither President Joe Biden nor former President Donald Trump to be their party's nominee in 2024, a Wednesday poll revealed.
While 62% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents wanted a nominee other than Trump, a comparable 59% of Democrats want the party to buck Biden in the next election cycle, according to the latest CNN poll.
Though Trump would be the first choice of just 38% of Republican-aligned voters, down from 44% in July, a further 41% say they would still vote for him should he secure the party nomination.
Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis stood as the clear alternative candidate to Trump with 38% of those who want a nominee other than Trump lining up behind him. A majority, however, did not back a specific alternative choice.
DeSantis was a rising star in the party prior to the midterm contests in November, but surged in popularity after decisively winning reelection by nearly 20 points in a formerly battleground state. A USA Today-Suffolk University poll released this week showed him leading Trump by 23 points in a potential primary match up.
Support for Biden among Democrats has moderately increased, by contrast, with the CNN survey showing 40% want the party to back his reelection, up from a July low of 25% in the same survey.
Democrats, however, remain less committal than Republicans in choosing an alternative to their leading figure. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vice President Kamala Harris, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg all received single-digit support.
An overwhelming 72% of Democrats who want someone other than Biden said they had no candidate in mind.
