Newsom fumes at Target for dropping pride merchandise, warns minorities 'you're next'
"Wake up America. This doesn’t stop here. You’re black? You’re Asian? You’re Jewish? You’re a woman? You’re next," he warned.
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday raged at retail giant Target for pulling select pride-theme items from its stores following public outcry, suggesting that such a move could provoke actions against other minority and special interest groups in the future.
"CEO of Target Brian Cornell selling out the LGBTQ+ community to extremists is a real profile in courage," he wrote on Twitter.
Target this week opted to remove LGBT+-themed items from British fashion brand Abprallen, which also sells Satan-inspired merchandise. A company insider suggested Target sought to avoid a "Bud Light situation," referencing a cataclysmic decline in the beer's sales after it partnered with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
The California governor suggested the move was part of a larger movement in opposition to pride and the gay community.
"This isn’t just a couple stores in the South," he said. "There is a systematic attack on the gay community happening across the country."
He further contended that, if left unchecked, such a movement might ultimately come for minority groups such as black and Asian Americans.
"Wake up America. This doesn’t stop here. You’re black? You’re Asian? You’re Jewish? You’re a woman? You’re next," he warned.
