Schumer vows vote on bill to protect access to contraception
Schumer made the remarks in the wake of former President Donald Trump's comments in an interview with KDKA-TV addressing the matter.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday announced that the Senate would vote in June on legislation to protect access to contraception.
"Now more than ever, contraception is a critical piece of protecting women's reproductive freedoms," he said, according to Politico.
“This is a clarifying political vote that will put every Republican on record as to whether or not they believe in a constitutional right to contraception,” Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey told the New York Times.
The announced comes in the wake of former President Donald Trump's comments in an interview with KDKA-TV addressing the prospect of restricting contraception.
"We’re looking at that, and I'm going to have a policy on that very shortly, and I think it’s something you’ll find interesting," Trump said in the interview. "I think it’s a smart decision. We’ll be releasing it very soon."
Later in the evening, Trump posed on Truth Social that "I HAVE NEVER, AND WILL NEVER ADVOCATE IMPOSING RESTRICTIONS ON BIRTH CONTROL, or other contraceptives."
"This is a Democrat fabricated lie, MISINFORMATION/DISINFORMATION, because they have nothing else to run on except FAILURE, POVERTY, AND DEATH. I DO NOT SUPPORT A BAN ON BIRTH CONTROL, AND NEITHER WILL THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!" he concluded.
