Gov. Cuomo calls on Trump to build 4 more temporary hospitals in NYC
Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on President Donald Trump Friday to approve the construction of four temporary hospitals across New York City.
“I want to have one for each borough,” Cuomo said at Friday’s press conference at the Javits Center in Manhattan.
The temporary hospitals would provide 4,000 additional hospital beds, ahead of the apex of Covid-19 patients, expected to take place within three weeks.
"With all of these beds we still have a shortfall," he said. "I'm going to ask the President today if he will authorize another four hospitals for us."
New York has 44,635 Covid-19 cases and 519 deaths, according to the latest data from the governor’s office.
In addition to hospital beds, Cuomo has been warning of the state's shortage of ventilators and has been urging Trump to use his powers under the Defense Production Act to direct manufacturers to ramp up production to meet the demand.
"The people are on ventilators much later than most patients are on ventilators," Cuomo said Friday.
"Most people are on a ventilator for two, three, four days. These [coronavirus] patients can come in and need a ventilator for up to 20 days, so you see how that need for ventilators is so important."
Speaking on Fox News' "Hannity" Thursday night, Trump said: "I don't believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators," in an apparent reference to Cuomo's recent claim that the state needed 30,000 ventilators.
Cuomo, after being asked about Trump's comments Friday, said his state's coronavirus response is based on facts and data.
