The Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka, the least populated region of Russia, started erupting on Saturday. The volcano is less than 300 miles from the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, where 180,000 people live.

Scientists told Russian state media that Shiveluch's ash column has reached five miles above sea level as the volcano "released a gush of lava," The Hill reported.

Russian state media reported no disruption to the daily lives of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky residents.

The earthquake occurred 63 miles east of the city and 18 miles below the ocean's surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
