British runner breaks the men’s mile world record that stood since 1999
Josh Kerr ran a time of 3:42:66
British runner Josh Kerr on Saturday broke the men's world record for fastest mile, defeating a 27-year-old record.
Kerr broke the record at a Diamond League meet in London where he defeated Moroccan legend Hicham El Guerrouj’s mark of 3 minutes, 43.13 seconds, setting a new record with 3 minutes, 42.66 seconds, according to the Associated Press.
“It was just me, my shoes and the track,” Kerr told the BBC. “I was absolutely deaf in that last 110 meters."
The 28-year-old runner finished three seconds ahead of the second-place winner, American Yared Nuguse, who finished with 3:45.69, beating his own record of 3:45.34, which he set in 2024.
“I didn’t take my foot off the gas,” Kerr told the outlet. “I started to glide and I was like, ‘Oh wow, this feels incredible.’ It’s incredible because I’m slowing down. So, I was like, ‘I better get to the line.’ So, crossing the finish line, seeing 42-something — anything — was my goal, so it was great.”
Kerr most recently previously finished second in the 1500m at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
