Charles crowned king of United Kingdom and Commonwealth at age 73

Prince Charles on Thursday was crowned king of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth immediately following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The 73-year-old Charles is now known as King Charles III. He was formerly known as Charles, Prince of Wales.

The king is now the oldest British monarch at the start of his reign.

His wife, Camilla, formerly known as the Duchess of Cornwall, now holds the title of Queen Consort, following Queen Elizabeth's request during her Accession Day message in earlier this year.

The last Queen Consort was Elizabeth the Queen Mother, crowned in 1937.

Charles' eldest son, Prince William, will inherit the title of Duke of Cornwall, a 150,000-acre estate yielding an income of more than $22 million annually, according to University College London.

The king's coronation will be held at Westminster Abbey at a later date. Elizabeth was coronated 16 months after ascending to the throne, but Charles' coronation is expected to be a smaller affair than previous years, The Daily Mail reported in February.

The new king's Christian name is Charles Philip Arthur George.
