Dozens killed, 100 injured in ski resort bar fire in Swiss Alps during New Year’s celebrations
Authorities don’t suspect terrorism but the cause of the fire at the Le Constellation bar at the Crans-Montana resort was still being investigated.
Dozens of New Year's revelers were killed and over 100 were injured early Thursday morning when a fire raged through a bar in a popular ski resort in the Swiss Alps.
Authorities in Switzerland said they did not suspect terrorism but the cause of the fire at the Le Constellation bar at the Crans-Montana resort was still being investigated.
Valais Canton police commander Frédéric Gisler said Thursday evening that approximately 40 people are dead and 115 were injured in the fire, with most of the injuries considered serious.
Switzerland President Guy Parmelin said the fire was “one of the worst tragedies our country has ever experienced."
“This tragedy occurred in a place that is naturally associated with life and joy,” Parmelin said. “What a terrible contrast, what cruel irony.”
Beatrice Pilloud, Valais Canton attorney general, said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire but a terror attack was not suspected.
“At no moment is there a question of any kind of attack,” Pilloud said, according to The Associated Press.
