Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in "life-threatening condition" after he was shot Wednesday.
He was transported via helicopter for treatment in the central Slovakia city of Banská Bystrica, and the next few hours are vital to his survival, his office said on Facebook.
Multiple shots were fired following a government meeting in Handlova, according to TASR, the News Agency of the Slovak Republic.
The suspect was detained and the building where the meeting was held was evacuated.
Videos circulating online show Fico being taken to his car after the shooting.
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the shooting on X, formerly Twitter, writing: I strongly condemn the vile attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with PM Fico and his family."
Parliamentary Vice-Chair Lubos Blaha confirmed the shooting and suspended the House session in response.
Fico, who became prime minister in 2023, has been described as a populist.
