A volcano on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent is erupting Friday morning, forcing residents to evacuate to safety.

Videos show large plumes of smoke erupting out of the volcano, according to NPR.

"An explosive eruption is taking place at the moment," journalist Kenville Horne said as he videotaped the volcano spewed smoke and ash Friday.

"All residents are asked to act accordingly with immediate effect to ensure their safety and that of their families," Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said Thursday prior to the eruption.

An estimated 16,000 residents live in the "red zone," the area of the Island closest to the volcano and the part with the most serious danger.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises announced Thursday they would send ships to aid in the evacuation.

Seismic activity was recorded for days before the eruption on the island.
