Flash floods in Nepal on Wednesday morning have killed at least 157 people and left hundreds of others, including tourists, missing.

The massive flooding on the Bhotekoshi River also caused widespread damage to villages and infrastructure, according to the Associated Press.

Roughly 484 tourists, including 391 from countries such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia were reported missing. Nepal's prime minister's office said approximately 93 Nepalis are missing, according to Reuters. 

The flooding occurred along Nepal's Himalayan border with China's Tibet.

“We have asked both India and China to help us with the rescue efforts,” said Sasmit Pokharel, a spokesperson for the Nepali government, the wire services also reported.

A mudslide/avalanche, perhaps triggered by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake, set off the flooding.
