More than 11,000 people were confirmed dead Wednesday in Turkey and Syria after an earthquake rocked the region earlier this week, marking the deadliest quake in more than a decade.

Rescuers are racing against the elements to save people trapped under debris as they battle frigid temperatures in the region.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the fatalities in his country have surpassed 8,500, according to The Associated Press.

Syria's death toll in government-held areas climbed to 1,250 while rebel-held areas have counted at least 1,280 deaths, according to local officials.
