ISIS leader killed, four U.S. servicemembers wounded, in Syrian helicopter raid
ISIS forces have largely lost control of their former holdings in eastern Syria, but remain active as an insurgent force.
A joint operation between U.S. forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces on Thursday evening led to the death of senior Islamic State leader Hamza al-Homsi and left four U.S. servicemembers and a working dog wounded.
United States Central Command announced the raid on Friday, saying "an explosion on target resulted in four U.S. servicemembers and one working dog wounded."
"The U.S. servicemembers and working dog are receiving treatment in a U.S. medical facility in Iraq," the press release continued.
ISIS forces have largely lost control of their former holdings in eastern Syria, but remain active as an insurgent force.
The raid comes in the aftermath of a major earthquake that rattled much of northern Syria and southern Turkey, potentially affecting the ongoing civil war as Syrian rebel forces continue to maintain a foothold in the country's northwest.
