Pro-Palestine advocacy group calls on professors to give 'extra credit' for attending protests
The group also floated the idea of "instead of writing a final paper," professors could allow students the option of "organizing an event for SJP related to the course material."
A pro-Palestinian protest group is calling on colleges and universities to provide "extra credit" for attending "Palestine solidarity" events.
"Advice for professors as the new semester approaches," wrote National Students for Justice in Palestine on the social media platform X with a list of recommendations.
The suggestions included "giving out extra credit to students who attend talks on Palestine solidarity and other anti-imperialist events on campus" and establishing an "independent study elective so that student organizers can receive academic credit for their work."
The group also floated the idea of "instead of writing a final paper," professors could allow students the option of "organizing an event for SJP related to the course material."
The advocacy group also suggested professors join or create a Faculty for Justice in Palestine Network chapter on campus.
"Offer support to students who are facing disciplinary charges and provide guidance throughout the process," National Students for Justice wrote.
The response from colleges and universities to the pro-Palestine protests that have taken place on campuses across the country has been a controversial issue.
Columbia University's president Minouche Shafik recently resigned after facing strong criticism of her handling of the protests.
