Turkish police on Tuesday killed one person and wounded two others in shootout outside of a building housing the Israeli ‌consulate in Istanbul.

The gunmen were wearing backpacks and firing automatic rifles and handguns, according to Reuters. They reportedly have ties to a group that “exploits religion,” Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci said.

The gun battle reportedly lasted for about 10 minutes outside the glass-tower building in Turkey's main financial district. Two police officers were slightly wounded.

Turkish and Israeli authorities said no Israeli staff were at the consulate at the time of the attack. Israeli diplomats left Turkey shortly after the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza began in late 2023.
