Ukraine hits Russia warship in Crimea missile attack

Ukraine struck a large Russia warship in Crimea with cruise missiles in an overnight attack that killed at least one person.

Russia's defense ministry reportedly said Ukraine – on which neighboring Russia declared war last year – used air-launched missiles to attack the Crimean port of Feodosia and damaged a so-called "landing ship" – which supports amphibious operations by carrying tanks, vehicles, cargo and landing troops directly onto a low slope beach with no docks or piers.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 in a move Kyiv and the West condemned as an illegal seizure, according to Reuters.

The Ukraine Air Force said it will be hard for the landing vessel, the Novocherkassk, to re-enter service. And the strike could make difficult Russia's efforts to try to seize more Ukrainian territory along the Black Sea coast.

Putin earlier this month said that Odessa, the headquarters of Ukraine's own navy, was "a Russian city," Reuters also reports.

Footage posted on Russian news outlets and social media appear to show the vessel being struck, with sounds of an explosion and images of flames lighting up the night sky.
